For centuries, women (and men) have adorned and decorated their faces and bodies with cosmetics or make-up. In many cultures, it’s how you showed your upper class status and wealth. In our culture, often we’re trying to look like we’re “supposed to” according to the movies and magazines. From what I’ve seen in 26 years in the skin care and cosmetics industry, I’ve witnessed its real emotional value. Simply put, when we look better, we feel better!
It’s interesting to see the value different women place on wearing makeup. I had a massage mid-day today so I ended up taking a makeup free day today. That said, I won’t go anywhere else that I might be seen wearing my colorless face. I did put gas in my car (and hoped I wouldn’t see anyone I knew). I just don’t leave home without it! I even packed my makeup when in labor with my second child – before I woke up my husband to take me to the hospital. I knew I would feel better with my makeup on!
Many women – some of my clients included – don’t wear makeup at all. That’s OK – everyone has their own comfort level with how they look and what they feel comfortable with. What’s interesting is when I work with a woman who’s never worn makeup and she sheepishly tells me it’s because she doesn’t know how. I teach her – usually a soft look that enhances her natural beauty. It’s important that she still sees the face she knows in the mirror. But the face looks different – and the new confidence and beauty shines through – she smiles radiantly and is reluctant to put down the mirror. I really know I’ve done my job when she calls to thank me. Her family noticed the transformation – she’s positively glowing from the new confidence a little makeup gave her. I’ve seen behavioral changes too – a woman who is more confident, more loving, and more patient. The simple act of well-applied makeup changes how she sees herself – and how others see her as well. The outside changes lead to a positive self image, which empowers us to transform from within as well.
