When they begin gaining weight, they feel it in their clothes and they quickly and simply begin cutting back the quantity of food and adding more quality foods. The amazing thing I found is that this decision isn’t a big deal, doesn’t involve any negative self-talk and is 100% drama free. It’s just a quick and easy decision and then they quickly take action. In a matter of days to weeks, they fall right back to their clothes fitting just the way they are used to. What I have come to learn is that this decision to change things isn’t long term. Do you ever wonder, “What in the world do the naturally skinny do to keep their weight under control? What do they do to stay thin? What are their secrets?”
I used to wonder the very same thing too when I was struggling like crazy to lose weight and keep it off!
In fact, I was so curious about these questions, that I dedicated over 23 years to understanding the naturally skinny, and today I want to share with you what I learned from the naturally thin that keeps them effortlessly thin.
What You Can Learn From Your Skinny Friends to Lose Weight
After years of dieting, I found myself gaining more and more weight. Watching the scale creep up after each dieting attempt was heartbreaking and downright depressing for me.
I found myself in sheer despair, thinking about food constantly, and losing hope that anything would ever be different.
As a Psychology student in college, I found myself passionate about motivational psychology and brain science.
I thought that it might make sense to try losing weight from an entirely different approach – an approach where I learned from the naturally skinny versus learning from diet books and diet programs.
What if instead of being jealous of my skinny friends, I learned from them and copied how they think, eat, and live?
I knew being skinny was something that I wanted to aim for, but did my friends know anything I didn’t already know?
And what would happen to my body if I began to copy them? Would I get even bigger?
This initial idea to learn from the thin, lead me to begin informally interviewing my friends.
As I began interviewing my friends and copying what they shared or modeled as to how to stay skinny, I found it clear why I wasn’t losing weight. I discovered that I was a both an overeater and emotional eater and I needed to get more in tune with my body and find tools to my emotional and overeating patterns.
You can learn a lot from your friends on how to be naturally skinny when you begin paying attention to how they eat.
Start paying attention to the following…
1. Do your naturally skinny friends snack or just eat meals?
2. How active are your naturally skinny friends?
3. How do your skinny friends approach eating at restaurants?
4. Do your naturally thin friends eat a lot or a little?
Your naturally skinny friends can reveal a lot to you if you begin paying attention.
After informally interviewing hundreds of naturally thin men and women, I began to see why some people are naturally skinny and why some people are not.
Here are seven things these naturally skinny had in common…
Seven Secrets of Naturally Skinny People
1. Naturally Skinny People Say “No” A Lot!
The naturally skinny are excellent at declining food. They don’t eat just because someone wants them to or because it’s that time of day. They go to numerous events, are engaged in many social situations, eat out at restaurants, and yet stay slim.
They do this by honoring their physical hunger cues day-in and day-out.
Here are some of the phrases I heard the naturally thin say when they didn’t want food:
“No thank you.”
“I’m not hungry”
“I can’t eat all that! Would you like to share?”
“Can you wrap that half up?
“I’d rather not, thank you.”
“The food was delicious, I can’t eat another bite.”
2. The naturally thin don’t diet they simply adjust their diet.
The naturally thin would never think of dieting. Why, because they’ve never had a weight issue and they have never thought of themselves any other way but skinny. Being skinny is just who they are.
When asking thin people if they worry about gaining weight, they almost always say, “no” and when I ask “why not?” they say, “because I’m skinny, I’ve never struggled with my weight.”
If a naturally thin person finds their clothes getting a bit snug or tummy getting slightly bigger when they look at themselves in the mirror, they just cut back a few bites here and there or they tell themselves to eat a bit more quality food.
There’s no force or absolutes in their decision to make a few adjustments to their eating. It’s not overly dramatic. It is just a choice to move the needle back in the right direction and this gentle nudge always gets them back fitting into their clothes the way they like with very little effort
3. The naturally thin separate their emotional needs from eating.
If the thin are sad, they cry or call a friend. If they are angry, they go workout or take a long walk.
There is little to no crossover between emotions and eating for the naturally thin. It simply doesn’t make sense to them, to eat because they are sad or head to the fridge because they had a bad day.
Food serves one main purpose – to end physical hunger.
4. The naturally thin can be social without eating.
If the thin are invited to a picnic or a BBQ, and they aren’t hungry, they have no problem avoiding food. When they do find themselves getting hungry, they will gladly grab a hotdog or hamburger or whatever they like; but they don’t just eat because food is there.
To the naturally thin, attending these events is about enjoying the company of friends and family. It’s about socializing, throwing a Frisbee and having fun. Food can be a component of this fun, but it certainly isn’t the main motivator.
5. The naturally thin eat food they enjoy.
It would never make sense to the naturally skinny, to eat celery sticks if they hate celery. The naturally skinny eat foods they enjoy when they get hungry. They never go into deprivation mode saying, “no, I can’t have this” or “I can’t have that.” They might say, “I don’t eat bread because it bothers my stomach” but it doesn’t come from a place of deprivation.
The naturally thin know that they can eat whatever they want when they are hungry. No is not an option unless of course there is an allergy, sensitivity to a certain food item, or it they just don’t want the food offered.
6. The naturally thin stay conscious during meals.
These thin men and women stay conscious of what they're eating and the effect the food they are eating is having on their body. You would almost never find a naturally thin person with their hand at the bottom of a bucket of popcorn wondering who ate it all.
These naturally thin men and women know what their bodies need before, during, and after they eat.
7. The naturally thin rarely overeat.
There is nothing worse to this group of thin individuals, then overeating. They hate how it sinks their energy level and forces their belly’s to protrude. Yuck! This extreme disdain for overeating keeps them from overindulging and because they hate how it fees, this hate reinforces negative feelings which is why the average naturally thin person only overeats two percent of the time (2 out of every 100 meals).
Now let’s look at what you can begin doing, to copy the habits of the naturally skinny and lose weight…
How to Start Taking On the Habits of Naturally Skinny People
1. Begin by eating when you’re hungry.
Start by identifying your hunger. Identify how your body experiences hunger.
You will find that different foods affect your hunger in different ways. You want to aim for foods that satiate your hunger and keep your energy at bay the longest.
2. Stop overeating.
The naturally thin hate the feeling of overeating.
One thing you can begin doing today is to take an assessment to see why you are eating and see how overeating is impacting your body.
Next, begin practicing the habit of taking a few fewer bites then you normally would. Soon you’ll find yourself getting comfortable with the two bites less method. At that point, you can keep taking two fewer bites until you find your satisfaction point. If you can’t find the feeling of satisfaction in your body, I go into great detail in my 30-Day Challenge. You can find out when my next challenge is coming by visiting this link: https://thinwithin.lpages.co/30-day-challenge-coming-soon/
3. Bring consciousness into your meal experience.
If you’re numbing out while you’re eating, it’s time to bring more consciousness in to your meal experience. You can do this by taking three deep breaths before you eat.
Next, put your fork and/or food down between bites. Throughout your meal, ask yourself, “Am I hungry?” so you can find the point where you feel more satisfied and avoid overeating.
If you find yourself checking out during mealtime, practice lovingly bringing your attention back to your stomach and you’re your breathing.
4. Pay attention to how different foods feel in your body.
Begin to notice how certain foods make you feel in your body. Does bread make you feel good or tired? Does chicken feel great in your body or does tofu make you feel better?
Notice how food feels in your body. Your ultimate goal is to put food in your body that keeps your energy amazing, your hunger satiated, your inflammation at bay and that tastes delicious.
What You Can Do to Get Naturally Skinny Mentally?
1. Address your emotional eating habits
I shared with you that the naturally skinny rarely eat for emotional reasons. They simply just don’t understand how eating would help them solve their emotional needs.
…because eating doesn’t! They are right.
Food will never solve your emotional needs, but addressing your feeling through will.
Knowing this, start becoming aware of your thoughts and how they choreograph everything in your life, including your weight.
If you want to lose weight, it’s imperative to direct your mind toward your goals and dreams and look at how your desire for food takes you out of alignment with what you truly want and why.
2. Stop focusing on things you dislike about yourself
Stop focusing on what you don’t like about yourself while minimizing your positive attributes.
Tell yourself three amazing things that you are grateful for about your body and personality every single day before you go to bed.
Compliment yourself and thank those who compliment you and skip the “but …”
3. Identify your thoughts and feelings
Begin to identify what feelings you actually feeling inside of you. When you identify a feeling, ask yourself what thought is responsible for making you feel that way.
Then ask yourself if that thought is helping you look and feel your best. If it’s not helping you look and feel beautiful, find a better thought!
4. Start being patient
Living, thinking and eating thin is like learning a new language, which requires patience. You wouldn’t expect to learn Chinese in a few weeks, would you?
Well, the real lasting language of losing weight takes patience too. It takes practice to eat in a new way, thinks in a new thin manner, and feel your feelings in a new way. When you combine these three tools, you will lose weight – just like if you practice Chinese each day, you will learn a new language.
