Do you find yourself going to the kitchen and rooting around for food when you're bored?  You aren’t physically hungry, but you find yourself searching for something. I have found myself in this situation more times than I care to count. What we are searching for is a way to alleviate boredom eating.

So, what can we do to alleviate boredom and stay out of the kitchen? The answer is to find activities that make our hearts sing. Activities that get us so involved that we do not feel hunger or realize the passage of time.

 

Here are a few suggestions: 

  1. Explore your artistic side: You can take classes, get a book, or just have fun. Two relatively new artistic endeavors to try are Zentangle, (formalized doodling), and Soul Collage. I took a workshop and the 4 ½ hours flew by without a thought of food.

     

  2. Perhaps you are more active:  Find a sport or activity that you love. Perhaps it is rock climbing, hiking, or just walking in the woods. Volunteer at a dog rescue and walk dogs, you will get the added bonus of a willing companion.

     

  3. Are you more sedentary? How about scrabble, word search, or jigsaw puzzles? You can read a romance novel or write in your journal, or take the time to luxuriate in the bathtub, followed by a mani-pedi.

     

  4. Are you handy? Perhaps your passion is fixing things around the house, or the house itself? Are you interested in making furniture, bookshelves, or frames?

  

If none of the above resonates with you, I suggest you gift yourself with the time you need to try different activities and see what you enjoy doing and that ignite your passion. Without that passion, you will find yourself back in the kitchen searching in the pantry for something, anything, to fill the empty spaces inside of yourself.
